Training with Clay Angel

I was once told by an Olympic Trap coach that the difference between a good Olympic Trap Shooter and the top Olympic Trap Shooters is an almost obsessive attention to detail. Olympic Trap shooters who are working towards those top positions on the competition leaderboards are constantly refining aspects of their shooting technique. Until recently there wasn't any technology available in the Clay Shooting market that can help a shooter analyse his/her technique, it was all done by the skilled eye of an experienced coach. With help from the innovative minds of a few individuals it is now easier to analyse your shooting technique, and as a result, develop much quicker. Clay Angel is a great new product that can help the Olympic Trap coach develop his/her clients' techniques and ultimately improve their scores.

Last summer i'd just returned from a trip to Italy where I had a new stock and fore end custom fitted. After using an ill fitting gun for so long I knew that it was going to take a while to work in my gun mount and get used to a correct gun fit. Whilst shooting at EYGC, Dennis Stepney kindly offered me the opportunity to try out his new Clay Angel system. A laser is used to check your gun's point of impact. You then stand in the cage and mount your gun so that the system operator can mark the datums of your head, comb, and feet positioning.

A microphone is attached to your shooting vest so that the system knows when to start the timer, and the cameras around the cage are adjusted to get the best possible views. A camera is also fitted to your gun barrel. This all took about 5 minutes. It is important to shoot as you would in competition because this training aid records everything about your shooting style.

These photos show the training data that was recorded when I tried the Clay Angel out, the metrics in the top of the screen will help the Coach to refine the shooter's technique.

It is the replay function where Clay Angel really excels because it is possible that a shooting coach may miss subtle flaws in your technique, Clay Angel will record everything including the elapsed time between calling for and hitting the target, and all this can be replayed as many times as you wish. All this is achieved through the use of camera technology, advanced computer graphics, biometrics and DVD based video footage for analysis. My confidence has definitely improved after learning that my gun fit and technique are fine, my timing is consistent, and I have no other problems such as head lifting.
